Payne’s Ford Trip Report - 22-25 Jan09

This was a somewhat spontaneous gathering of Wellington climbers at the Payne’s Ford crag near Takaka past Nelson. Over 3 days around 13-14 climbers succumbed to the joys of climbing on limestone at Payne’s Ford and Pohara. That is when they weren’t swimming in the sea or in the refreshing swimming holes at the Ford! Which was only to be expected in the windless 30 degree heat that prevailed throughout. For the advanced climbers (i.e. grades 20-25) there were plenty of opportunities at Payne’s to extend themselves. For the mid-Range climbers, after they had exhausted the dozen or so midrange climbs at Paynes which were nearly all on the first crag, they rapidly retreated to the much more extensive and well bolted Pohara crags adjacent to the beach. Here there were 3 times as many climbs in the 15-19 range and all much longer (up to 25m). Early starts were advisable as from around 10-11am the shade was very sketchy. Each day was finished off with good pub meals either at Pohara (Guinness and Cricket on Sky) or at the Mussel Inn. Marvelous!
