Section members Richard Davies and Kieran Paton and ex-section member Ben Clark decided to express their love on Valentines day. Their love of ridiculous challenges that is…. Leaving a chilly Putara roadend (Northern Tararuas) just after 4am on the morning of Valentines day we raced up on to the tops above Herepai Hut in the dark and at dawn began running south down the main range of the Tararuas, the endless tussock bumps passed in a blur, with a cold breeze keeping conditions bearable the first sit down was at Junction Knob after about 10hrs. Maungahuka Hut was reached in 14 and a half hours. Passing through Kime Hut under a large yellow moon in 18hrs meant that the scarcely believable sub 24hr PK (PutaraKaitoke) was on. Sadly the moonlit southern crossing and Marchant ridge broke us and we stumbled out to Kaitoke 26hr 52mins after leaving Putara carpark, just after our second dawn of the trip. Still a fun day out, just snuck in as my longest day out in the hills and the 4th fastest PK I am aware of. Recommended. Maybe. Richard Davies
