Kahurangi National Park

Just back from a week in Kahurangi National Park. Happy to report that, in all my trips into New Zealand’s back country, I’ve never seen such a variety or proliferation of native birdlife in one place. Robins and Weka everywhere. Blue ducks, Fantail, Tui, Bellbird, Kereru, Tomtit, Kea, Kakariki. Normally you need to pause and tune in to hear birdsong in our forests, but not this time – it was constantly all around me. I’m told that Kahurangi National Park is one of the areas longest receiving 1080 drops. Seems to me that my experience is anecdotal proof that it’s working? Pity about the wasps though. I’ve never seen more of them in one place before either. And, unlike the Robins, they’re not friendly - Peter Laurenson. Blue ducks, not only in the rivers, but on the tracks as well! The result of a wasp nest encounter on the trail (if you can call it that) below Baton Saddle Powered by volunteers We’re always thankful for volunteers and members stepping forward to help the section run smoothly. A lot goes on to keep our club going, virtually all powered by volunteers. On the back page is our “Club on a page” summary. It gives an at a glance description of all the things we do, how and why. Feel free to print a copy and pass it on to anyone who might be interested in becoming a member or volunteer.
