A group of six from the Palmerston North section ventured to Whangaehu Hut on 1–2 September 2007 despite forecasts of severe wind conditions. Terry summed up conditions at Tukino on the way in: “It’s windy as blankity.” The party changed into winter gear at Waiouru before heading to the ski field, where they were buffeted heavily on the walk to the hut. The first night was restless.
The following morning conditions improved slightly and the Palmerston North contingent explored the Whangaehu glacier and surrounding terrain, pushing toward the Summit Plateau through snaking ghosts of spindrift. The group reached Dome Shelter as their highest point after retreating from Pyramid due to the wind. From Dome’s summit they observed the white cone of Ngauruhoe beyond the northern peaks of Ruapehu, and took in a first view of Crater Lake before descending back to the hut.
Evening brought intensifying conditions. The hut shook with the gusts and venturing outside required crampons. Another uncomfortable night followed.
By morning conditions had moderated enough to leave, but a half-inch-thick sheet of ice blocked the outer door and required clearing with an ice axe. The group returned via Tukino, passing a snow cave constructed by visiting students.
Participants: Mike Courtney, Terry Crippen, Murray Gifford, Malcolm Leary, Rachael Schmidt, and Chris Tuffley.
