A group of five climbers — two from Wellington, two from Canterbury, and Tessa Bunny from Otago — met at Unwin Hut for a late-winter alpine adventure. They crossed the partially frozen Tasman River and ascended Gorilla Stream, noting the lower water levels and quicker pace compared to summer conditions. The southeastern slopes showed extensive avalanche debris.
After reaching the bivvy rock in 3.5 hours, they continued upward through knee-high powder snow toward the saddle. The temperature dropped dramatically overnight, with frozen boots and socks creating challenges. Using knives and hot water bottles, they managed to free their boots the following morning.
The summit day brought blue skies despite cold winds. The bergshrund and crevasses were snow-covered, making passage safer. However, Scott descended early due to cold feet and developed frostnip. Though his toes eventually thawed, the experience proved painful. The team descended quickly, crossed the Tasman River in darkness, and returned to Unwin Hut, arriving at a nearby 21st birthday celebration looking notably worn from their expedition.
